Year 1 Overview

Year 1 of the Chemistry course performs two important functions:

1.Year 1 develops your understanding of a lot of the GCSE content, revisiting familiar topics but considering them in much more detail.

2.The content covered in Year 1 will prepare you for the more challenging Year 2 topics.

To succeed on the course, it is essential that you fully understand all the Year 1 content before you move into Year 2

The chemistry course taught by Andy in Year 1 is split into 10 distinct units. The units and teaching order are shown in the table.

The teaching order has been designed to allow you to develop your understanding of GCSE topics and at the same time gain knowledge and understanding of the new A Level content.

You will study three broad areas of chemistry on the course, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Your teacher will explain what content each topic will cover and how it links into the two-year course.

As you progress through the course you may find that a particular area appeals to you more than the others.

The schedule of teaching for my classes in 2022 is shown in the tables in this section. Click on each image to expand. I will try to keep to the dates shown in the schedule but it is likely that they will move slightly. Just be aware that we will finish the course in plenty of time to start some meaningful revision in class and that you will be fully prepared for any external examinations at the end of the year.

As a year 1 chemistry student it is important to understand that the course is difficult and that at first, you may not make as much progress as you expect. As you study the first few units it is normal to feel overwhelmed.

Don't panic. Just listen to everything I tell you and keep going!

Remember, always ask for help.

You will find that some units will come easier to you than others and there are a number of reasons for this. If you do feel that certain units are more difficult than others, you should work with your teacher to try and find out the reason and then work on trying to improve your understanding.

At the end of each unit, you will prepare for, and complete, an end of unit test (EOUT). The tests are 60 minutes long and you will complete them under exam conditions in class. I will mark your answers thoroughly and return your paper. Each marked EOUT paper should be kept safe in your notes, ideally at the end of the notes for the unit the test covers.

Each EOUT will allow you to track your progress through the course and allow you to target specific areas and topics where you can improve your understanding. They will also ensure you have a bank of personalised revision resources that you can use to start organising your own revision.
